The Most Dangerous Highways in New Jersey
A recent report by NJ Advance Media provides alarming statistics concerning the safety of New Jersey highways. Unlike small roads running through residential neighborhoods, larger highways present greater safety risks for drivers. With more vehicles traveling these roads every day, thousands of accidents occur on state highways each year.
According to 2018 crash data obtained from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, 12 state highways are the scene of most collisions. With almost 400 million toll transactions recorded each year, the most dangerous highway listed was the Garden State Parkway with over 10,000 collisions in 2018. The New Jersey Turnpike followed closely behind with close to 8,000 crashes in the same year.
Other accident scenes include highways with large volumes of commuting cars, roads running across the state, and roads with numerous traffic lights and entrance or exit ramps. The Most Dangerous Highways list includes the following:
Long roads running many miles, such as Route 9, see a large share of traffic accidents each year. Roads that run next to large shopping centers or office parks also tend to be among the most dangerous, such as Route 1 in West Windsor, Route 46 in Little Falls, and Route 22 in Union Township.
A significant amount of collisions occurs on highways running east to west or north to south through the state, including Interstate 80 connecting the Hudson and Delaware Rivers and Interstate 287 connecting the New Jersey Turnpike and the New York State Thruway. These roadways attract large numbers of commuters, especially in portions which intersect with other highways, such as Interstate 78, Route 202, and Route 206. Interstate 295 leading to Philadelphia also ranks high on the list with many commuter accidents.
