Fatalities Occur During Amtrak Train Derailment in Washington
A major train derailment occurred near Dupont, Washington on Monday morning. The fatal accident took place when an Amtrak passenger train derailed over the Interstate 5 overpass during its first trip on a new service line. Several passengers on the train sustained fatal injuries while numerous cars were struck by falling train cars. Over 70 people were transported to hospitals in both Pierce and Thurston Counties for treatment of personal injuries, including nearly five victims who sustained serious injuries, after the train derailment. This was the first day on a new service route for the train according to a report from CNN. The National Transportation Safety Board has sent an investigation team to determine the cause of the crash.
Although the possibility of train derailments may seem rare, when they do occur, the results could be catastrophic. Since trains travel at such high speeds, when an accident occurs, whether a collision or a derailment, passengers may incur a range of personal injuries and potential fatalities. Even survivors of a train accident may suffer from continued mental distress or debilitating injuries that guarantees a long and challenging recovery time.
